Beaches are the staple of the western Michigan lakeshore area. The Arts Council of White Lake is celebrating local artists Roycine King, Ben Bennett, and Tina Larson—whose work has been inspired by the natural beauty of the beaches of Lake Michigan—with a new exhibit, “On the Beach”, that will run in the gallery of the ACWL from June 26 through August 4. The ACWL is located at 106 E. Colby St. in Whitehall, MI 49461. For additional information you may call the ACWL at (231) 893-2524 or visit their website.
Ridding Cobmoosa Shores of Invading Japanese Barberry Anyone interested in helping rid our association of the invasive Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii), is asked meet at the Morrison cottage (9002 Huron Trail) on Wednesday, July 25th at 8:30 am. All are welcome to help, but please wear work gloves (the plant is spiny) and bring a large, sturdy plastic bag so we can bag the remains to dry it out before composting. A couple of us will carry shovels to go after a few of the larger “bad boy” plants.
This is the beginning of what will be a struggle to get these invasive shrubs out of Cobmoosa Shores before they take over the area. For more information about Japanese barberry (and other plants problematic in Michigan), please consult the Michigan State University Extension Field Identification Guide to Invasive Plants. We need everyone’s assistance! Remove these plants on your property first, then join in this and the following “planned pulls” when you can! This effort is being coordinated by Jan Morrison, Trustee, and Barb Rafaill. In the photos included the bottom two are credited to the Wisconsin DNR The memorial bench honoring John Morrison has been placed in the park across from the North Access. It was presented to Jan Morrison and her family on Friday, July 6th. The photo shows Donny and Audrey (Tocco), Janis, Natalie and Lucas (Tocco) sitting on the bench. A plaque will soon be added to the bench. Anyone wishing to make a donation in John’s memory may do so by mailing a check to one of his favorite charities, Homes for Our Troops:
