The annual household hazardous waste collection for Oceana County is scheduled for August 20 at the Hart Department of Public Works located at 1010 State Street. Residents have the opportunity to drop off motor oil, automotive fluids, electronics, chemicals, oil-based paints, batteries and medications. For a complete list of items that are accepted (and those that are not), please visit the HHW page on the Oceana Conservation District website. The event is possible every year thanks to financial support from the County, townships, municipalities and District Health Department #10, as well as donations from supporting organizations and private donors.

Cobmoosa Shores now has a program that is available to members for treating the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid that has attacked and is killing hemlocks in our area. Our Cobmoosa board has already signed a contract to treat trees on Cobmoosa property with Muskegon Conservation District. MCD is now offering Cobmoosa Shores members help in assessing and treating the infected hemlocks on their private property at a reasonable cost. For example, one member has been quoted the price of $1150 for treating 30 large and 100 small hemlocks that will protect those trees for 5-7 years. (Compare that with the price of taking down one large tree at the cost of more than a thousand dollars.)
MCD’s program in Cobmoosa will include lot surveys, tagging trees, and the actual treatment of hemlocks. The service will begin in fall of 2022 at the earliest (due to high demand) and will continue through 2023. Lot owners will be individually contacted with an estimate, which includes the cost of both survey and treatment labor, mileage, and materials. The price will not go over the quoted estimate. Before signing on for service, you will have a chance to fully review the contract and are under no obligation to sign. If you choose to sign, MCD will then treat your trees for you. To date, 58 CSA members (which is about 30% of our total membership) have signed up with MCD for this program. If you wish to join this list, please contact Janis Morrison via the Question/Comment Contact Us form on the CSA website. In the question/comment section of that form be sure to include the following information:
If you have any questions about this issue, look at the Tree Problems of our website. Treating our hemlocks is important to stop the spread of this deadly insect infestation to other hemlocks. Once a tree is attacked it will die within 5-10 years if left untreated. So, if you have even one hemlock on your property it is important to treat it. To help new and existing members of the Cobmoosa Shores Association your Board of Trustees has prepared a Welcome Document which addresses many of the questions that each of us, when we first became members of CSA, had such as what utility companies serve the area? What are the rules governing the association? and so forth. To access this document first select WELCOME TO CSA from the ABOUT US menu of the CSA website then click on the link “Welcome Document” on the “Welcome to Cobmoosa Shores Association” page. The document will then be displayed. You may now save it and/or print it.
It is likely that over time this document will be updated. If/when that happens, a new document will be uploaded to the website with a new date in the lower left corner of each page. You will be alerted to any document updates via the CSA eNewsletter. |
